Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo lead sports stars in condemning Barcelona attack

New Delhi: Football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo came forth on Thursday to join hands with other sports personalities from Spain to express their grief on yesterday's terror attack in Barcelona, which left 13 people dead.

It was late in the Thursday afternoon that a van rammed into the heart of Catalan capital, in a packed street named Las Ramblas, killing 13 and injuring around 100. Few hours later Catalan police were informed of a second van attack in the town of Cambrils, 70 miles away from Barcelona, where four people were shot dead. A fifth died a few hours later.

“FC Barcelona wants to express its profound sorrow and utter disgust at the terrorist attack that has hit the heart of our city, La Rambla de Barcelona. The Club wishes to send our support and thoughts to the victims, their families and friends as well as the people of Barcelona and its visitors. As a mark of respect, the flags will fly at half-mast at the club’s installations and the players from both teams will wear black armbands in all the club’s matches this weekend,” the club said in a statement.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy used the phrase "jihadist terrorism" to describe the van attack and added that it required global response. "Today the fight against terrorism is the principal priority for free and open societies like ours. It is a global threat and the response has to be global,” Rajoy said in a news conference.
